Iowa Polio Stories Oral History Project collection, 1910-2008 bulk 2007

This collection includes 51 oral history interview recordings and transcripts (2007-2008); photos provided by interviewees; written narratives submitted by Iowans who were not recorded (2007); copies of newspaper and magazine articles (1910-2008); copies of polio stories from the Post-Polio Bransongoers Association; web site printouts; scrapbook pages (1950); and project administration files. The bulk of the recordings are on audio cassettes, with 4 interviews on CD-ROMs. Web site printouts and newspaper and magazine articles cover a range of topics from historical background to medical advice for post-polio survivors.

The State Library of Iowa hired Kate Scott to coordinate an oral history project to document the history and impact of polio in Iowa. Interviewees represented counties across Iowa and ranged in age from 55 to 96 and included medical personnel, family members and friends of the afflicted, and polio survivors.
